Calling all Thurmaston Scouts
past and present
This year is the Group’s 80th Anniversary and there will be a number of events over the year to celebrate this.
The Group was granted a licence to commence scouting in Thurmaston on 18th April 1934 and has grown from these humble beginnings to an established group within Leicestershire.
This year the group has a membership of over 130 young people and leaders and during 2013 gained their first female Scout.
To commemorate their anniversary on Friday 18th April there will be a gathering at the Scout headquarters on Unicorn Street from 7pm until 9pm. This is an open invitation to anyone who has been involved in Scouting in Thurmaston at any point during the past 80 years to join them on this evening. Please register your interest with Group Scout Leader, Carl Pickering by calling 0116 212 7361, who asks that you share this information with anyone else who has been involved with the group and may not read this article.
There will be a special commemorative badge on sale at the anniversary evening which can be purchased at £1.
There will be other events taking place during the year for all sections within the Group and at the Group Gang Show in April, there will a display of pictures entitled ‘Through the Years’ from as many pictures as they have been able to gather.
The anniversary year will be completed with a Group Camp for all members at Oaks in Charnwood camp site over the August Bank Holiday weekend at which over 150 members are expected to attend.
Over the coming months there will be a regular feature in the Thurmaston Times providing a history of the group through
the last 80 years, see page 10 for the first instalment.
New function room to open at Community Centre
The new room at Thurmaston Community Centre is almost finished and will be officially opened in April.
The construction of the new room is testament to the determination and hard work of Tony Willmott and his committee who have made the idea of the extension become a reality.
The centre is run entirely by volunteers and the project, which has been funded from hire fees and fundraising events, received a massive boost last year when Asda donated £10,000 which really pushed the project along.
Booking are now being taken for functions from May onwards and the bright, warm new room is ideal for small parties, regular or one-off meetings or business conferences for 25-35 people.
The opening will take place on Saturday 26th April at 7.00pm and everyone is welcome. Admission is free by ticket only and the evening will include a dance display by The Starlets and refreshments. Get your free ticket early (only 100 available) from the centre directly.
